Icehearts Europe in Spain: Supporting Vulnerable Youth Through Sport and Mentorship

Spain is one of five countries hosting a pilot initiative of Icehearts Europe, which offers long-term mentorship and community support to young people in under-resourced neighbourhoods. At its core, the initiative uses sport as a powerful tool for inclusion.

“In every session or workshop, students learn to respect each other’s opinions. They realise that every comment matters and adds value. There’s no need to mock or laugh at what someone else says. No comment is silly – what doesn’t help is staying silent and not taking part.

Through these workshops, students become more confident. They learn to express their thoughts clearly, both in writing and out loud, in front of the group. Every time they speak up, they make a contribution.

They also learn that when someone else shares an idea, there’s always something to learn from it. This builds their self-esteem, helps them understand others better, and fosters a strong sense of teamwork.”

A Safe Space for Growth

Icehearts Europe in Spain is more than a programme promoting physical activity—it is a structured, long-term intervention aimed at preventing social exclusion. Vulnerable children receive consistent mentorship both in and outside the classroom, creating a supportive environment where they can grow in confidence, learn essential life skills, and improve their emotional and physical well-being.

The programme provides a safe and trusting space where children and adolescents are accompanied, supported, and encouraged to pursue their personal goals—all through sport and physical activity.

“I feel I can talk about the things I like and express my opinions freely. I can speak about personal things, my insecurities—topics we often find hard to discuss because they can feel uncomfortable. But here, I don’t feel judged because you know me, and I know you.”

Activities That Inspire and Include

Fútbol Más, the organisation leading the Icehearts Europe pilot in Spain, has developed a diverse range of activities, including sports sessions, emotional skills workshops, and both individual and group mentoring. These take place in schools and local community spaces, ensuring children are supported in familiar environments.

The results are already visible—70% of participating families report that their children have shown improved attitudes towards school and better emotional well-being. Children say they enjoy the sessions because they feel listened to, respected, and free to be themselves.

Collaboration at the Core

This pilot owes its success to strong collaboration between mentors, schools, families, and community partners. Mentors provide ongoing academic and emotional support, building trust and meaningful relationships with each child. Schools have praised the programme for strengthening social and emotional skills in a dynamic, engaging way.

Families are actively involved too—they attend workshops and help track their children's progress, forming a supportive network around each child. Local partners such as the Real Betis Balompié Foundation, the University of Seville, and La Torre de Hortaleza Association enrich the programme further, tailoring it to the specific needs of each community.

“Fútbol Más makes school feel better for me because we get along more, and we don’t argue as much in class when we’re with you. We respect each other more, and everyone can enjoy themselves. I want to continue next year because these activities have helped me feel closer to my classmates.”
